The Chemistry Education Study Program was established in response to the high demand for chemistry teachers in West Kalimantan. Recruiting teachers from outside the province presented several challenges, including the limited availability of adequate housing facilities and infrastructure for these teachers. Based on Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education No. 178/D/T/2003, dated January 30, 2003, and signed by Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro, then Director General of Higher Education, the Chemistry Education Study Program was formally established under the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Education (PMIPA), Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Universitas Tanjungpura (UNTAN).
In 2020, the Chemistry Education Study Program implemented the Merdeka Belajar–Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program. In 2008, the program received its first accreditation certificate, achieving a C rating based on BAN-PT Decree No. 011/BAN-PT/Ak-XI/S1/VI/2008. During its second accreditation in 2014, the program achieved a B rating based on BAN-PT Decree No. 176/BAN-PT/Akred/S/VI/2014. Subsequently, in its third accreditation in 2019, the program achieved an A rating based on BAN-PT Decree No. 3409/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/S/IX/2019.
The Chemistry Education Study Program offers an undergraduate (Strata 1/S1) degree, with a standard study period of 7–8 semesters (approximately four years). Graduates of the Chemistry Education Study Program are awarded the degree of Bachelor of Education (Sarjana Pendidikan/S.Pd.).
